You wake up on a cold morning and the bedroom window is covered in water.
There are droplets across the glass.
The bottom of the frame is wet.
Maybe there's even a small puddle forming on the sill.
The immediate assumption is often:
“My windows must be failing.”
Sometimes there is a problem with the window.
But very often, the water isn't coming through the window at all.
It's coming from the air inside your home.
Understanding why it happens is the first step towards deciding what actually needs fixing.

What Causes Condensation on Windows?
Warm air can contain water vapour.
When that warm, moisture-containing air meets a sufficiently cold surface, the air next to that surface cools and may no longer be able to hold the same amount of moisture.
Water then forms on the surface.
Windows are particularly noticeable because glass can be one of the colder surfaces in a room.
That's why condensation often becomes more obvious during autumn and winter.
But if you're constantly wiping large amounts of water from your windows, it's worth asking why so much moisture is accumulating.

1. Everyday Life Is Producing Moisture
A surprising amount of moisture can be released into a home through normal activities.
Cooking.
Showering.
Bathing.
Drying clothes.
Even breathing.
None of those activities means there's a problem with the property.
The issue arises when moisture is being produced faster than the home can remove it.
A busy household drying washing indoors, cooking dinner and taking several showers can create very different conditions from an empty property during the same evening.
The first question isn't necessarily:
“Where's the leak?”
It might be:
“Where is all this moisture going?”

2. The Room Isn't Getting Enough Ventilation
Modern homes are often designed to reduce unwanted draughts and heat loss.
That's useful for energy efficiency.
But moisture still needs a route out.
Extractor fans, trickle ventilators and other intentional ventilation can therefore play an important role.
If bathroom extraction isn't working effectively, cooking ventilation isn't being used appropriately, or intentional ventilation has been blocked, moisture can remain inside.
Eventually it finds cold surfaces.
Windows make the result obvious.
Be cautious about permanently sealing every small source of airflow because the house “feels draughty”.
An unwanted gap around a door and a ventilation feature designed to manage moisture are not the same thing.

3. You're Drying Clothes Indoors
This is a major source of indoor moisture in many homes.
The water disappearing from wet clothes doesn't vanish.
It enters the surrounding air.
During colder weather, when windows are often closed more frequently, that moisture can remain inside the property.
If you need to dry clothes indoors, think about how moisture is being managed.
That could mean using appropriate ventilation or a suitable dehumidifier depending on the circumstances.
The objective isn't simply to get the clothes dry.
It's to stop all that water ending up on the windows and other cold surfaces.

4. The Bedroom Is Cold Overnight
Bedroom condensation often becomes particularly noticeable in the morning.
That makes sense.
People have spent hours in the room producing moisture through respiration while the outside temperature has fallen and the window surface has become colder.
If the bedroom is also poorly ventilated, the conditions become even more favourable for condensation.
This is why a bedroom window can be relatively clear during the day but soaked when you wake up.
The window hasn't necessarily developed a fault overnight.
The conditions around it have changed.

5. Furniture Is Restricting Air Movement
Windows aren't the only places condensation can appear.
Cold external walls behind large wardrobes, beds or cupboards can also become vulnerable where air circulation is poor.
That matters because the first visible sign might eventually be mould rather than obvious water droplets.
If you have recurring condensation problems, look beyond the glass.
Check:
Behind furniture.
Around window reveals.
In room corners.
Inside cupboards against external walls.
Around the edges of curtains.
Condensation is easier to manage before persistent dampness creates secondary problems.

6. Your Extractor Fan Isn't Working Properly
A fan can make noise without necessarily providing effective extraction.
Bathroom and kitchen ventilation can become less effective because of dirt, obstruction, poor installation, maintenance issues or faults.
You may simply have stopped noticing that performance has gradually declined.
If condensation has recently become worse, consider whether the ventilation serving high-moisture areas is actually doing what you expect.
Don't dismantle electrical equipment unless you're competent to do so.
Where there's a genuine fault, the appropriate trade can investigate it.

7. The Windows Are Particularly Cold
Not all windows perform equally.
Older glazing, poorly performing frames or other weaknesses can result in colder internal surfaces.
And the colder the surface becomes, the easier it can be for condensation to form when indoor humidity is high enough.
This is one reason replacing old windows can sometimes improve condensation problems.
But there's an important catch.
Installing new windows doesn't stop your household producing moisture.
If ventilation and indoor humidity are the underlying problem, simply replacing the glass may not solve everything.
In some cases, making a property more airtight while failing to consider ventilation can create different moisture problems.
So don't assume wet windows automatically mean:
“I need new windows.”

8. It Might Not Be Ordinary Surface Condensation
Where the water appears matters.
Moisture on the room-facing surface of the glass can often be wiped away and is commonly associated with indoor condensation.
But moisture or misting that appears between the panes of a sealed double-glazed unit is different.
You can't simply wipe that from either side.
Persistent misting or moisture between the panes can indicate that the sealed glazing unit has failed.
That doesn't necessarily mean the entire window frame needs replacing.
Depending on the window and its condition, replacing the affected glazing unit may be an option.
This is why identifying where the moisture actually is matters before deciding on the remedy.

Should You Wipe Condensation Away?
Yes, persistent water shouldn't simply be left sitting on frames and sills.
Removing it can help protect surrounding finishes while you address the underlying cause.
But wiping the window every morning is managing the symptom.
If it repeatedly returns, ask why.
Otherwise moisture can contribute to deterioration around seals, frames, decoration and nearby surfaces, while persistent damp conditions can also encourage mould growth.

What About a Dehumidifier?
A dehumidifier can be useful in some homes because it removes moisture from the air.
But think of it as a tool rather than an automatic cure.
If the bathroom extractor has failed, fixing the extractor may make more sense than running a dehumidifier indefinitely to compensate.
If you're drying washing indoors because you have no practical alternative, however, a dehumidifier may form part of a sensible moisture-management approach.
The solution depends on why humidity is high in the first place.

When Could It Be Something More Serious?
Not every damp patch around a window is condensation.
Investigate further if you notice things such as:
Persistent staining that doesn't follow the usual condensation pattern.
Water appearing during or after rainfall.
Damaged external seals or surrounding materials.
Deteriorating plaster.
Moisture concentrated in one unusual location.
A damp patch continuing regardless of how the room is used.
Or mould and dampness extending significantly beyond typical cold surfaces.
Water can enter buildings through defects as well as forming from indoor humidity.
If the cause isn't obvious, getting the problem properly investigated is better than repeatedly treating the visible symptom.

Don't Just Paint Over the Mould
If condensation has contributed to mould around a window, cleaning or redecorating the surface without dealing with the moisture conditions may only provide a temporary improvement.
The same applies to constantly using mould-resistant products while ignoring a failed extractor or persistent excess humidity.
Ask:
Why is this surface staying damp enough for the problem to return?
Fixing that is much more useful than repeatedly hiding the evidence.

Start With the Pattern
Before spending money, pay attention to when and where the condensation happens.
Is it mainly:
In bedrooms overnight?
After showers?
While cooking?
When drying clothes?
Only during very cold weather?
On every window?
Or just one?
Is the moisture on the room side of the glass or trapped between the panes?
Those details can narrow the possibilities considerably.
You don't need to diagnose the entire building yourself.
You just need enough information to describe the problem accurately.

Wet Windows Don't Automatically Mean Bad Windows
Sometimes the window really is part of the problem.
Sometimes ventilation is inadequate.
Sometimes indoor moisture production is unusually high.
And often several factors are interacting at once.
That's why immediately replacing windows—or immediately blaming the people living in the property—can both oversimplify the issue.
Look at the whole picture:
Moisture production + ventilation + temperature + the building itself.
Those four things usually tell you far more than the water on the glass alone.
Condensation is the visible symptom. Understanding why the moisture is there is what leads you towards the right solution.
